Colonoscopy and Colorectal Cancer Update: Good News

Of all the cancers affecting men and women, colorectal cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death from cancer in the United States. Yet it doesn’t always have to be fatal; timely colonoscopy screening can make the difference in outcomes.

Colon cancer is one of the few cancers we can actually prevent through the cancer screening program (colonoscopy)… the vast majority of these colon cancers are completely preventable,” asserts Scott Gehring, MD, double Board Certified by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery and the American Board of General Surgery and Vice President of Surgical Services at Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage, California.

James Conti, MD, a Board Certified Gastroenterologist, also with Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage, provides insight on what may put individuals in the “high risk” category. “High risk is based on individual family members… and (you) having certain gastrointestinal diseases, such as chronic inflammatory bowel disease.”
