Eisenhower’s New Level IV Trauma + Geriatric Emergency Department Designations

Eisenhower Health’s Emergency Department was recently awarded a Level IV Trauma designation. According to Dr. Eric Leroux, “that designation means that we’ve met a certain level of standard for our ability to evaluate, stabilize, and resuscitate patients with traumatic injury. And the reason that’s important is because trauma care does require some special skill sets, some special equipment at times, special processes and an operational flow that can respond very quickly so that a patient doesn’t need to wait if they have an injury whose likelihood of being treated well is highly dependent on it being done quickly.”

Dr. Leroux states that an accepted concept called The Golden Hour of Trauma Care is critical to a successful outcome for someone who has just experienced some form of traumatic injury. That’s where the processes, skills, technology and teamwork that got Eisenhower’s ED team the Level IV Trauma designation are most significant – it’s not just a designation, it saves lives.

In addition to Eisenhower’s Emergency Department being a Level IV Trauma Center, a Certified Chest Pain Center and an Advanced Primary Stroke Center, it has now been accredited by the American College of Emergency Physicians as a Geriatric Emergency Department. Only six percent of emergency departments in the U.S. have received that accreditation and now Eisenhower is on the forefront of that growing movement of emergency care specialization.
