How to Improve Coachella Valley’s COVID-19 Projections

In this Health Insights video blog, Epidemiologist Patricia Cummings, PhD, MPH, Director, Department of Epidemiology Research and Evaluation, Eisenhower Health, shares sobering COVID-19 projections for Coachella Valley. There’s good news – we can change those projections – and she also tells us how.

“Reducing morbidity and mortality in the highest risk groups, including those over the age of 65, and those with chronic conditions like heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, reduces both the demand on critical care and overall mortality.”

The projections are based on simulation modeling that predict the number of people who will fall ill to the coronavirus pandemic without our community embracing three key intervention actions. The model uses what we know about the virus to date.

In How to Improve Coachella Valley’s COVID-19 Projections, Dr. Cummings explains the role of epidemiologists and the scientific approach that she, a colleague from the  UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and the epidemiology team at Eisenhower Health took to build the COVID-10 projections model. And, she covers how using this data can improve outcomes for the residents of Coachella Valley in relation to the coronavirus pandemic. Key insights:

  • Projected number of CV residents who will get COVID-19 and the numbers requiring hospitalization and intensive care without strong intervention actions. Modeling estimates in the video are based on 2-4 week projections.
  • Three key intervention actions:
    • Home quarantine
    • Social distancing
    • Case isolation
  • The burden a lack of action would have on health systems in the Coachella Valley

Clearly, the impact on those with chronic conditions and those over the age of 65 is dramatic, reinforcing the important message to stay home and practice social distancing to minimize the impact of COVID-19 on our community.
