Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S. — taking more lives each year than breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. Because it often develops without symptoms until a later stage, early detection is key. The good news: when found early, lung cancer is highly treatable. For non-small cell lung cancer, which makes up about 80% of cases, the cure rate can reach 90% with early diagnosis and treatment. That’s why Eisenhower Health’s Low-Dose CT (LDCT) screening program makes it simple to take a proactive step toward protecting your health. Listen to our short podcast on lung cancer screening to learn more about the benefits of early detection.
The Importance of Early Detection
LDCT scans are the most effective tool for detecting lung cancer in its earliest, most curable stages using minimal radiation and no invasive procedures. The scan is quick, painless, and detailed enough to identify even small abnormalities.
Who Should Get Screened?
You may qualify for an annual LDCT screening if you:
- Are between the ages of 50 and 80
- Have a 20 pack-year smoking history (one pack a day for 20 years, or two packs a day for 10 years)
- Currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years
- Have no current symptoms of lung cancer

Beyond Screening: Everyday Ways to Protect Your Lung Health
While screening saves lives, prevention plays a powerful role, too. Even if you’re not eligible for LDCT, there are several ways to strengthen and protect your lungs:
- Quit Smoking — or Help Someone Else Quit
Smoking remains the top risk factor for lung cancer. Quitting at any age provides immediate and long-term health benefits. Eisenhower Health offers counseling, medication support, and other resources to help make quitting successful.
- Test Your Home for Radon
Radon is an odorless, invisible gas that naturally occurs in soil and can enter homes through small foundation openings. It’s the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Testing your home is simple and inexpensive, and mitigation systems are highly effective when elevated levels are found.
- Minimize Secondhand Smoke and Environmental Exposures
Avoid secondhand smoke, reduce time around diesel exhaust, and use protective gear if you work around chemicals or dust.
- Stay Active and Eat Well
Regular physical activity supports lung function, while a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables provides antioxidants that help protect cells from damage.
- Keep Up with Routine Care
Talk with your primary care provider about any persistent cough, shortness of breath, or unexplained fatigue. Routine visits help catch potential concerns early.
