Sports Medicine – It’s Not Just for Weekend Warriors!

Does sports medicine apply to you? “Sports medicine has really evolved. In the past it was something you did in your youth. We now realize how important it is for our physical and mental well-being. It’s not just for Weekend Warriors anymore!” says Matthew Diltz, MD, a Board Certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon with Eisenhower Desert Orthopedic Center in Rancho Mirage, CA.

“Sports medicine not only treats just the injury, but we’re trying to prevent the injury,” adds Patrick St. Pierre, MD, also a Board Certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon with Eisenhower. Dr. St. Pierre is also Medical Director for the prestigious BNP Paribas Tennis Open.

It’s beginning to look like the benefits of sports medicine are for just about anyone who is active in sports and working out, regardless of their age. In this audio podcast episode of the Health Insights blog – Sports Medicine – It’s Not Just for Weekend Warriors! – Drs. St. Pierre and Diltz offer insight on the numerous ways sports medicine helps to improve quality of life for a growing active population, including:

  • Joint preservation
  • The role of yoga and Pilates
  • Dynamic vs static stretching
  • Biologics program – stem cell and plasma
  • The role of physical therapy
  • Arthroscopic surgery

The next time you hear the term ‘sports medicine’ you’ll know that it no longer is solely the domain of young athletes and has a great deal to offer a much larger population of people interested in getting and staying active throughout their life.
