“Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is really pretty much an epidemic, affecting 3 million people in the United States now, expected to more than double over the next 15 years,” asserts Andrew Rubin, MD, Co-Director of the Electrophysiology (EP) Laboratory at Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage, CA.
AFib is an electrical disorder of the heart — in fact, it’s the most common disorders of the heart. Aside from the discomfort that can occur with atrial fibrillation, AFib patients also have a very high risk of stroke.
Current treatment options range from conservative measures – medication – to advanced procedures such as cardiac ablation or the cutting-edge Watchman™ procedure. Cardiac ablation is a well-proven procedure involving the elimination of abnormal electricity in the heart. The Watchman procedure focuses on stroke prevention and eliminating the patient’s need for pills or blood thinners. For people who have problems taking medication or blood thinners, the Watchman procedure is an excellent option.
In this Health Insights video blog – Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Treatment Options – Dr. Rubin informs and helps us understand Afib and treatment options. He covers:

- Stroke risk reduction
- Cardiac ablation
