Sheltering at home – but now you just have to go out? Using face coverings can increase your protection – IF they’re used properly. Watch this short video and learn how to make sure your face covering is providing the protection you need.
In addition to maintaining social distancing and proper handwashing techniques, it’s now recommended (and in Riverside Country mandated at least through April 30, 2020) that we wear a face covering when we leave our homes during this COVID-19 high-risk period of time. Proper technique for virus protection isn’t exactly a native skill for most of us – so just how do we know that we’re doing it the right way and providing that extra level of protection?
Eisenhower Health wants to help community members learn how to use their face coverings for maximum protection – whether it’s a bandana or a home-made mask. In this video you’ll see the proper techniques demonstrated by two Eisenhower Health professionals – Brigette Davila, BSN, RN, an Infection Preventionist Nurse, and Wendy Edwards, MSN, RN, NE – BC, a Clinical Nursing Director. And, they’ve also added guidance on proper glove technique as well.
In this Health Insight blog post – How to Properly Use Face Masks and Gloves for COVID-19 Protection – Edwards and Davila demonstrate proper face mask technique to avoid contaminating yourself and others:
- How to remove a face covering
- Protecting the front of the face covering
- Cleaning the face covering
- Handwashing – yes, again!
- How to remove gloves
Let’s back up a moment and first acknowledge that the best tip is to not go out of your home at all during this high-contagion time period, if you can help it. Yet, there are those among us who need to go out to provide essential services, replenish food supplies, pick-up prescriptions or keep important non-coronavirus medical appointments. For those times when you just have to leave, remember these tips and get the maximum benefit from your face covering. It also turns out that your handwashing technique is vital for your protection as well – learn how to become a Handwashing Master at Protecting Yourself from COVID-19: Handwashing 101 Video.
