Should we just accept that losing our balance and falling are inevitable outcomes of aging? Or that if they do occur, there’s little we can do to prevent more? Not if the Eisenhower Balance Institute has anything to do with it: the word inevitable isn’t in their playbook.
“We lose our muscle strength, flexibility and endurance as we age. Muscle mass decreases 3 – 5% every decade after 30 years of age and that rate increases over the age of 60,” says Florence, Tse, Senior Physical Therapist, DSc, at Eisenhower Balance Institute. Proactively maintaining muscle strength can help. Yet there are many other ways our balance can become problematic — and there are also potential solutions from the Balance Institute to help you prevent or manage balance problems.
In addition to loss of muscle strength, vision changes, osteoarthritis, reduced bone density, cardiovascular issues, inner-ear disorders, neck pain/spasms, fatigue and reduced activity, traumatic brain injuries, diseases associated with aging, accidents and more can create conditions that lead to imbalance and falls. Any of these conditions can affect the way the body perceives balance signals, how well the brain processes those signals and how well the body executes those actions to maintain balance.
