Quick Video Tip: Poor Posture Drives Back and Neck Pain

New smartphone and computer technologies are a boon on many levels. Yet, we need to be more mindful of how to use these devices. And, use them in ways that won’t cause pain and discomfort to our bodies due to poor posture habits.

“We often forget how important posture is for everyday functioning. Did you know that one of the more frequent causes of poor posture relates to the use of smart phones and being on computer monitors all day?” asks Reginald Fayssoux, MD, a fellowship-trained Orthopedic Spinal Surgeon with Eisenhower Desert Orthopedic Center in Rancho Mirage, California.

As we know, it’s really easy to lose track of good posture habits when we get absorbed in something interesting while using these devices. Poor posture can creep in without our being aware. Nevertheless, mindfulness in using healthy posture techniques while on these devices is key to a healthy back and neck, free of pain.

In Quick Video Tip: Poor Posture Drives Back and Neck Pain – Dr. Fayssoux discusses how to reverse poor posture problems when using technology. These are problems of our own making, caused by lack of awareness of our body alignment while using smartphones and computers. And since they’re problems of our own making, he covers what we can do to correct poor posture, including:

  • The impact of our smartphone use
  • Neck bending
  • Wear and tear of neck disks
  • Computer monitor/body alignment

If you or a loved one have back pain or neck pain caused due to poor posture habits, Dr. Fayssoux has helpful tips to help you correct those problems. Additionally, there are more videos on a range of orthopedic topics, including the popular Quick Tip Video series, available in the Orthopedic Video Library.
