Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. While many cases grow slowly, some are more aggressive, making awareness and early detection essential.
Risk and Screening
Risk factors for prostate cancer include age, family history and ethnicity. Screening typically involves a prostate‐specific antigen (PSA) blood test and a digital rectal exam (DRE). Men at average risk may begin screening at age 50. Men at higher risk — such as those with a family history or African American men — may benefit from screening earlier, around age 45, as they are more likely to be diagnosed at a younger age.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on how advanced the cancer is as well as patient preferences. Common approaches include:
- Active Surveillance – Monitoring low‐risk cancers with regular PSA tests and imaging.
- Surgery (Robotic Prostatectomy) – Minimally invasive techniques now provide shorter recovery times and less blood loss.
- Radiation Therapy – External beam or brachytherapy options.
- Other Therapies – Hormone therapy, chemotherapy, or clinical trials for advanced disease.
Supportive care for urinary, sexual and emotional health is also an important part of treatment.
