Common Hand Problems: Conservative to Surgical Treatment Options

“The hand has very intricate anatomy,” observes Jacob Bosley, MD, a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon affiliated with Eisenhower Desert Orthopedic Center in Rancho Mirage, California. And rather surprisingly he points out that the hand actually has a greater number of bones than found within the shoulder, hip or knee. So, what could go wrong? And what can we do about it?

It turns out that our hands have a number of ways they can “go wrong,” including patients born with hand conditions, conditions that are by-products of systemic illnesses (such as trigger finger and diabetes), issues that develop over time (such as carpal tunnel disease) and accidents. Many of these problems can be managed with a variety of conservative, non-surgical treatment options. When conservative treatment measures aren’t an option or no longer work, there are also a range of surgical options to consider.

In this episode of the Health Insights blog – Common Hand Problems: Conservative to Surgical Treatment Options – Dr. Bosley walks us through the most common hand problems and ways to manage them, including:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Basal thumb arthritis
  • Wrist fractures
  • Dupuytren’s contracture
  • Trigger finger

Once you watch this video, you’ll have a far better understanding of hand anatomy, plus common medical issues of the hand and the numerous treatment options to consider. He also covers the variety of anesthesia options available for surgical solutions.
