New Treatment for COPD and Emphysema Sufferers

There’s Good News for people suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and/or emphysema: The Zephyr Endobronchial Valve. Eisenhower Health is the 1st medical center in Southern California to offer this new lung valve treatment to people suffering from COPD and/or emphysema.

The Zephyr Endobronchial Valve is implanted in the patient’s airways. For patients whose lungs are filled but they’re unable to expel the air, the valve expels the air for them. And this can be a game-changer for their quality of life.

Justin Thomas, MD

Benefits patients gained from this treatment include an 18 to 30 percent improvement in lung function, significant improvement in breathing, the ability to walk longer distances, and a change for the better in their quality of life.

“These patients actually kind of get a renewed hope on life when it works well,” comments Justin Thomas, MD, a formally trained and Board Certified Interventional Pulmonologist at Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage, California, who specializes in minimally invasive procedures for diagnosis and treatment or palliation of lung cancer, benign and malignant airway disease, and diffuse lung diseases.
