Innovative Rehabilitation: Driving + Low Vision Programs

Innovative rehabilitation programs, such as the Driving Assessment program and Low Vision Rehabilitation program offered by Eisenhower Rehabilitation Services in Rancho Mirage, California, help people experiencing health challenges that interfere with their ability to safely drive or remain functional in their activities of daily living.

People who have major health issues, such as a stroke, challenges related to aging, or progressive eye diseases may find that the associated personal skills and techniques that previously contributed to their quality of life are now compromised. The Driving Assessment and Low Vision Rehabilitation programs offer a way forward.

  Kathryn Scheuring

In this Health Insights audio podcast post, Innovative Rehab: Driving and Low Vision Programs, Kathryn Scheuring, MS, OTR/L, discusses these rehab programs and helps us understand who might benefit from them and what they might gain.

“Driving rehabilitation is more for people who have undergone some sort of large health problem – maybe a stroke, maybe a traumatic brain injury – and they’re relearning the skills to be able to drive.”          Kathryn Scheuring

While health setbacks and aging issues can be daunting, these innovative programs offer a way to either reclaim skills associated with driving or retrain for functional vision independence that contributes to a better quality of life. Topics covered include:

  • Driving evaluations
  • Driving assessment program
  • Low vision rehabilitation program
  • Qualification for program participation
  • Referral process
