Game-changing Heart Technology: TAVR

In the past, heart valve disease was treated with open heart surgery. Recent innovation in medical technology has been a game-changer for people with heart valve disease, allowing them to be treated minimally invasively. In many cases, this has been life-saving treatment for patients who could not withstand an open heart procedure and had no alternative treatment option. This innovative technology is the TAVR procedure – Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement.

Moreover transcatheter aortic valve replacements used to be limited to patients who were thought to be high-risk. More recently, data has shown that transcatheter aortic valve replacements can be successfully implanted in those that are even low risk for open heart surgery” points out Praveen Panguluri, MD, a Board Certified Interventional Cardiologist with Eisenhower Desert Cardiology Center.

If everything goes as expected, patients go home the day after the procedure and can resume all activities they were doing prior to the procedure. In contrast, individuals undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement have a prolonged recovery time, including several days in the intensive care unit after their procedure followed by several weeks of rehabilitation. Now, that’s the very definition of game-changing heart technology!

In this Health Insights video blog – Game-changing Heart Technology: TAVR – Dr. Panguluri, brings us up to speed on this game-changing medical technology and most importantly what it means for aortic valve patients. He covers the following:

  • Aortic valve disease symptoms
  • The TAVR procedure
  • Candidacy for the procedure
  • Recovery expectations
  • Patient outcomes

If you have any of the symptoms of Aortic Valve Disease covered by Dr. Panguluri in this video, or a friend/family member who deals with this disease, medical technology innovation is working in your favor.
