Is It Chest Pain or a Heart Attack – What to Do?

First – if you even think you or a loved one may be having a heart attack CALL 911. Do not drive to Emergency and don’t self-diagnose. Why? “Time is muscle. So, in terms of a heart attack, the longer the heart muscle goes without blood flow, the more damage is done,” asserts Euthym N. Kontaxis, MD, Medical Director, Tennity Emergency Department, Eisenhower Health, Rancho Mirage, CA.

By arriving at the Emergency Department in an ambulance, you have just given yourself the gift of time. Because time is critical and the ambulance effectively becomes an emergency department on wheels with capability to immediately help you and communicate vital information in advance of your arrival to the Emergency Department.

How do you know if you’ve had a heart attack? While you’re in distress is no time for you to decide to become a doctor. If you even think you might be having a heart attack, CALL 911.

And, be aware that heart disease is an equal-opportunity gender offender.  says Khoi M. Le, MD, Interventional Cardiologist with Eisenhower Desert Cardiology Center in Rancho Mirage, CA. Learn more about the distinctions between how a woman experiences a heart attack from a man – and much more – in this informative audio podcast.

Timely action saves lives!
