Quick Video Tip: Plantar Fasciitis and Desert Homes

“Wear some sort of protective foot gear while in the house as well as outside to prevent plantar fasciitis,” advises Michael Seiberg, DPM, a Board Certified podiatrist with Eisenhower Desert Orthopedic Center in Rancho Mirage, California, who specializes in conservative and surgical treatment of foot and ankle disorders.

Dr. Seiberg goes on to point out that this advise is meant for people who live in homes in hot climates, such as the Coachella Valley desert area where he is located, where people tend to have a lot of hard tile floors instead of padded carpeting. Walking barefoot on this hard flooring can exacerbate heel and arch pain, potentially causing repetitive trauma over time.  His advice is to wear some sort of slipper or sandal or shoe in the house rather than go barefoot, if possible, to prevent the hard surface of the tile floor from causing plantar fasciitis.

In this short Health Insights blog video about plantar fasciitis – Quick Video Tip: Plantar Fasciitis and Desert Homes – Dr. Seiberg offers some advice that may help prevent plantar fasciitis or manage the discomfort. He covers:

  • An overview of plantar fasciitis
  • How hard flooring can cause problems
  • Foot changes that come with aging
  • Conservative treatment options
  • Prevention tips

If you have a habit of walking barefoot on hard tile flooring, this short video may get you to rethink what that might do to your foot out ahead and how to prevent the problems that can come with plantar fasciitis. Take a moment out of your busy day and treat your health as a priority.
