“Your Primary Care doctor is your personal physician. It should be the GO TO person to help you navigate the heath care system, coordinate your care. Usually the primary care physician can handle about 85% of the reasons you might need a doctor,” says Joseph Scherger, MD, MPH, at Eisenhower Health.
If your care requires a specialist, your primary care doctor can then make a referral to the correct type of specialist and coordinate your care. It’s hard for people to sort that out on their own and often the patient has difficulty determining the specific specialty type that is needed.
Joseph Scherger, MD, MPH
Dr. Scherger recommends that you “test it out” and visit primary care doctors for a problem and maybe you will settle into one – kind of like dating – and see whether the chemistry is there.
