What is Atrial Fibrillation, or AFib, as it’s commonly known? Why should we care? For starters, there are nearly three million AFib patients and another 30% undiagnosed. And, AFib patients have up to five times greater risk for stroke. Do we have your attention? Learn the signs, symptoms and latest treatments, including the Watchman procedure.
According to Andrew Rubin, MD, Co-Director of the Electrophysiology (EP) Laboratory at Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage, CA, “Atrial Fibrillation in a minority of patients is associated with minimal to no symptoms. And, unfortunately in those people, the first presentation of atrial fibrillation may be a stroke. So, there is community awareness of better ways to try to detect this silent AFib subgroup.”
His fellow Co-Director is in strong agreement with him: “The number one job of a physician who is treating a patient with Atrial Fibrillation is to prevent the disastrous outcome of a stroke,” contends Leon Feldman, MD, FACC, and Co-Director of the Electrophysiology (EP) Laboratory/Arrhythmia Center at Eisenhower. “Patients who have AFIB can have up to a five times greater risk for stroke than a similarly aged cohort. It makes up a significant number of strokes, especially as you get into the older population.”
