Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) – Who’s at Risk?

“30% of patients with heart disease will have blocked arteries in their legs,” says Puneet Khanna, MD, Board Certified Cardiologist with Eisenhower Desert Cardiology Center. It’s not just heart disease patients who’re at risk for peripheral arterial disease (PAD). People with diabetes, smokers/former smokers, and older patients are also at risk.

Peripheral arterial disease — also known as blocked leg arteries — is a heart condition that can be identified with a ten minute diagnostic test, and you can then be on your way to treatment. Leg arteries that get blocked with plaque can create a number of problems if not treated.

In this Health Insights video blog – Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) – Who’s at Risk? – Dr. Khanna, who is also the Co-Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at Eisenhower Health, succinctly brings us up to speed on peripheral arterial disease and covers the following:

  • Who’s at risk
  • Symptoms
  • Success expectations
  • Critical limb ischemia – unhealed foot ulcers
  • Problem correction

If you or a loved one has any of the PAD risk factors covered by Dr. Khanna in this video, you might want to consider taking the time for a check-up. If it turns out that you have peripheral arterial disease, special procedures and expertise that focus on your situation can improve your quality of life and help you avoid bad outcomes.
