When Is It Time to Consider Hip Replacement Surgery?

Perhaps you’ve been treating your hip pain with conservative measures, hoping to resolve it without surgery. If you’ve reached a point where it’s apparent that conservative measures aren’t working, it may be time to consider what you’ve been trying to avoid: hip replacement surgery.

While it’s true that an orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip problems can diagnosis whether you’re a good candidate for hip replacement surgery, they can also tell if it’s time to begin that conversation. According to Erik Schnaser, MD, a fellowship-trained hip and knee replacement surgeon with Eisenhower Desert Orthopedic Center, “generally speaking patients will have severe pain in their groin and buttock area.”  In other words—you’ll know it’s time!

In this Health Insights video blog – When Is It Time to Consider Hip Replacement Surgery? – Dr. Schnaser walks us through the procedure and even addresses that almost-impossible-to-believe question: ‘do patients really get up and walk right away? He also covers the following:

  • When to move from conservative treatment
  • Components of hip replacement surgery
  • Length of time in surgery
  • Pain management
  • Home care after surgery
  • The best recovery therapy
  • How long does it take to feel normal
