Primary Care’s Future: Eisenhower’s Residency Clinic

Jonathan Bechard, MD, Medical Director, Eisenhower Center for Internal Medicine, points out that there’s a lack of enough primary care doctors nationally and this has contributed to a lot of wait times and difficulty for patients getting access to physicians when they need it.

Enter Eisenhower Health’s strategy: the Eisenhower Internal Residency Medicine Program. Five years ago, Eisenhower Health established the Graduate Medical Education Program to train doctors in internal medicine and family medicine.

Both programs are now at capacity with dozens of physicians in training. Dr. Bechard explains why patients might prefer being seen by a resident and the benefits, including longer appointment times and easy access with walk-in service as well as same and next day appointments. In Primary Care’s Future: Eisenhower’s Residency Clinic, Dr. Bechard will cover the following topics:

  • Residency clinic defined
  • Eisenhower’s Residency Clinic approach
  • Patient and community benefits
  • Family medicine vs. internal medicine

Eisenhower’s Center for Internal Medicine is located at the Eisenhower Health Center at Cathedral City North. Eisenhower’s Center for Family Medicine is located at the Eisenhower George and Julia Argyros Health Center in La Quinta

The residency program significantly improves Eisenhower Health’s opportunity to attract and retain highly qualified primary care doctors for Coachella Valley patients now and in the future.
