50 to 70 million people in the United States have sleep disorders, according to the American Sleep Association. Astounding numbers – but why is that such a big health concern?
“250,000 drivers fall asleep at the wheel each day. Driving drowsy can cause a crash every 25 seconds, an injury every minute, and a fatality every 70 minutes,”
says Talene Churukian, DO, MPH, with a sub-specialty in sleep medicine, citing a statistic from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dr. Churukian is medical director of Eisenhower Sleep Center in Palm Desert, CA.
Clearly, so many people falling asleep at the wheel is a substantial problem for all of us… and that’s just one of the dangers that can come from sleep disorders. Is it any wonder that the CDC declared sleep disorders – disrupted sleep and lack of sleep – a public health epidemic?
