Unrelenting Demand + High Risk: Two Sisters Take Action

Eisenhower Health is experiencing extraordinary COVID-related demand for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect health care professionals and patients. Eisenhower’s run rate on PPE is now five times the norm. Multiple challenges to maintaining a steady supply create problems. This is the story of two young women – sisters – who took action.

Samar Mann, a college student at Pitzer College (one of the Claremont Colleges) and her sister, Piya Mann, a student at Palm Desert High School, chose to act. As children of two Eisenhower doctors, they were acutely aware of the risk that health care workers were shouldering and the degree of difficulty in maintaining PPE supplies to protect them and they decided to do something.

“They (health care professionals) go to work every day and they’re putting themselves at risk – at such high risk. And so, we wanted to do something that could help them.”     Samar Mann

This is their story. The story of two young women who created a Go Fund Me account and used social media to raise $5,000 in three weeks’ time to help Eisenhower Health purchase PPE and to draw attention to the severity of the PPE scarcity issue.

Not only is Eisenhower Health using around five times the amount of PPE as was normal pre-pandemic, sometimes Eisenhower needs to pay three to four times the pre-COVID prices due to nationwide shortages. Eisenhower Health thanks Piya and Samar Mann for their thoughtful actions and support of the organization.
