Quick Video Tip: Pap Smear or Pelvic Exam?

Have you been confused as to whether or not you need a pap smear or a pelvic exam? Well, you’re not alone — the new recommendations have left many patients confused,” says Lisa Lindley, MD, a Board Certified Gynecologist with Eisenhower Women’s Health 365 in Rancho Mirage, California.

They are not the same thing. When your doctor does a pelvic exam, it includes a detailed investigation of your tissues, looking for lesions and feeling for masses that may have nothing to do with your female organs.

In this Quick Video Tip: Pap Smear or Pelvic Exam – Dr. Lindley offers some advice that may help clear up any lingering confusion that may exist, including:

  • What a pelvic examination involves
  • The purpose of a pap smear
  • What to do if you have had a hysterectomy

We hope this quick tip video clarifies the distinctions between a pelvic exam and pap smear – as well as their relationship to each other and what you may need.
