Heart attacks are the #1 killer of adults in the United States. Yet two easy-to-learn techniques – Early Heart Attack Care (EHAC) and Hands-Only CPR – can save lives. “Early warning signs may come and go for hours or days before the chest pain becomes severe – but when treated early prevention can take place to avert sudden death and cardiac damage,” says Lydia Vincent, Chest Pain Coordinator at Eisenhower Health.
Lydia joins forces with Captain Justin Carp, California Fire Paramedic, Indian Wells Station, to help us understand these techniques. They point out that there are actually three different presentations of a heart attack: 1) the heart attack that stops you dead in your tracks, 2) the classic elephant sitting on a chest feeling heart attack, and 3) the heart attack that’s just beginning. Outcomes can be improved by fast implementation of EHAC or Hands-Only CPR when you understand which to use for the type of heart attack that presents.
