Are we there yet? Well, apparently not: COVID-19 is still with us. Many of us have been postponing important preventative medical procedures—such as a Colonoscopy—waiting for this all to go away. Yet scheduling that Colonoscopy is important: colorectal cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death from cancer in the United States.

With no discernible end in sight to COVID, we still need to live and find ways to take care of ourselves. In fact, it’s probably more important than ever that we make sure our health is in tip-top shape. And colon cancer is preventable if we act in a timely manner to identify it early enough.

Colon cancer is one of the few cancers we can actually prevent through the cancer screening program (colonoscopy)… the vast majority of these colon cancers are completely preventable,” asserts Scott Gering, MD, double Board Certified by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery and the American Board of General Surgery and Vice President of Surgical Services at Eisenhower Health.

It’s natural to be reticent to do anything that’s not absolutely necessary during times such as these. Still, colonoscopies save lives and early detection is critical. And that means getting a colonoscopy when your doctor recommends it.

If early detection is so critical – how can you safely have a Colonoscopy procedure in the time of COVID? Watch Eliane Coffler, Eisenhower Health, answer common questions you may have about doing this procedure while COVID is still dominating our lives. And, Dr. Coffler goes over the procedures that Eisenhower Health has instituted to ensure patient safety.

If you need to update yourself on the values of having a colonoscopy or how it works, we also have an audio podcast that provides a good overview and addresses what may put individuals in the “high risk” category that should have a colonoscopy sooner rather than later.

James Conti, MD and Scott Gering, MD

In this short audio podcast entitled Colonoscopy Guidance for Colorectal Cancer Prevention (Good News), listen as Scott Gering, MD, and James Conti, MD, discuss the benefits of colonoscopy screening and changes in colonoscopy prep that offer good news for the reluctant participant. They cover:

  • Screening guidelines – when to start/stop and frequency of testing
  • Importance of detecting and removing pre-cancerous polyps
  • How to tell if your risk of colon cancer is high
  • Changes in colonoscopy preparation (Good News)
  • Newer trend of colon cancer in younger people.

We cover these topics and more in this informative audio podcast. You may also find the patient stories in this article to be helpful: Three Patients Explain Why You Shouldn’t Put Off Your Colonoscopy. Convinced? Call our physician referral line today at 760-568-1234.
