Deep Dive Video: Advances in Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Therapies

If you’re looking for an understanding of the range of Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) therapies available – including recent state-of-art cardiac technology – this video presentation by Andrew Rubin, MD, Co-Director of the Electrophysiology (EP) Laboratory at Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage, CA – fits the bill.  It’s a great way to get up to speed on recent AFib treatments, and a good assessment of the pro and cons associated with each.

Dr. Rubin also puts Atrial Fibrillation therapies into perspective alongside related heart issues and helps us to understand the distinctions between electrical and non-electrical heart problems and the doctors who specialize in each. For instance, congenital heart disease is an example of a non-electrical heart problem, and he colorfully calls the cardiologists who specialize in this area “the plumbers!” Whereas electrical heart problems fall into two categories: Bradycardia – slow beats and Tachycardia – fast beats. AFib falls under fast beats – Tachycardia. He likens the doctors who specialize in electrical heart problems as “the electricians!”

The burning question is: what can Atrial Fibrillation do to me? And the answer is just not good. According to Dr. Rubin, “you could have a stroke… you may just not feel well and need to be hospitalized, you may have bleeding problems from blood thinners, you may develop congestive heart failure. There’s the cost of medicines, office visits and hospitalizations involved. So, there’s a lot of things AFib can do.”

In fact, this edition of Eisenhower’s Health Insights blog post Deep Dive Video: Advances in Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Therapies – is a video lecture that really gives you a layman’s understanding of the disease, causes, problems and treatments and puts it into perspective alongside other heart issues. Others must think so too – it’s been seen by thousands of people in and outside of Coachella Valley. Samples of the topics Dr. Rubin covers in the video include:

  • Electrical and non-electrical heart problems
  • Causes of Atrial Fibrillation
  • The damage AFib can do to you
  • The range of traditional and state-of-art therapies
  • Pacemakers and The Watchman™
  • The future outlook for Atrial Fibrillation treatment
