Hand and Wrist Injuries: Treatment and Prevention

There are 29 bones, 29 joints, 123 ligaments, 34 muscles and 48 nerves in your hand. So, what could go wrong? Stephen O’Connell, MD, and Jacob Bosley, MD, prefer to focus on what could be made right or even prevented and cover a lot of territory in this audio podcast about hand and wrist injury treatments and prevention.

“25% of athletic injuries involve the hand or wrist. 40% of injuries in an emergency room typically involve hand and wrist injuries. But when you think about it, the hand is our connection with the world. It’s part of our personality, we use it for communication, for discussion… for touching,” says Stephen O’Connell, MD, a Board Certified, fellowship-trained Orthopedic Surgeon with Eisenhower Desert Orthopedic Center in Rancho Mirage, CA, who specializes in surgery of the hand, wrist and shoulder.

“The most common thing that happens is just some kind of a fall onto an outstretched wrist. It’s pretty hard to prevent yourself from falling, just because we encourage people to be active and do things. The best thing we can do for prevention of wrist fractures is maintaining the bone health or the bone density,” adds Jacob Bosley, MD, also a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon with Eisenhower Desert Orthopedic Center, who practices in Palm Springs and La Quinta.

It’s fair to say that Drs. O’Connell and Bosley delve into the details of hands and wrists in this Health Insight podcast (audio) blog episode – Hand and Wrist Injuries: Treatment and Prevention – including:

  • Wrist fracture prevention
  • Importance of rehabilitation
  • Non-surgical and surgical treatment options
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Two-point discrimination test
  • Hand arthritis
  • Trigger finger

Maybe we can’t always avoid those falls or the natural instinct to protect ourselves from the worst impact of a fall with an outstretched wrist. Hopefully, this podcast provides food for thought on how to mitigate the impact or even prevent the damage of those falls to begin with.
