Deep Dive: Aortic Valve Stenosis Repair with TAVR

There are 250,000 patients annually in the U.S. who meet the criteria for aortic valve replacement. Those who don’t undertake a procedure to repair their aortic valve – do nothing – have much higher mortality rates than those who have a replacement procedure. A diseased aortic valve “is an indication to intervene because if you don’t, there is a 50% chance that that patient will not be alive two years later,” says P.K. Khanna, MD, FACC and Board Certified in Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, Vascular Medicine and Endovascular Medicine with the Eisenhower Desert Cardiology Center.

Those are stark projections. And yet 2/3 of those people don’t have the procedure.

If you’re one of those who have been reluctant to replace a damaged aortic valve because it involved major open heart surgery, take “heart!” Transaortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) – is a minimally invasive aortic valve replacement procedure that’s done with local anesthesia and sedation in under two hours with one night hospitalization. It’s a game-changer in cardiovascular technology, technique, care, and patient outcomes.
