There are 250,000 patients annually in the U.S. who meet the criteria for aortic valve replacement. Those who don’t undertake a procedure to repair their aortic valve – do nothing – have much higher mortality rates than those who have a replacement procedure. A diseased aortic valve “is an indication to intervene because if you don’t, there is a 50% chance that that patient will not be alive two years later,” says P.K.
